UM doctoral student from Department of Psychology received the Student Best Poster Award

Hui ZHOU, a PhD student of Department of Psychology, University of Macau, received the Student Best Poster Award of the 8th International Conference on Behavioral Addiction, which is the annual official conference of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Addictions. The poster reported the study of the validation of the Attitudes Towards Gambling Scale (ATGS) among Chinese adults. Her study found the 10-item ATGS had two-factor structure (i.e., positive and negative effects of gambling), satisfactory concurrent validity, and good reliability. This study provides a reliable and valid assessment for Chinese adults’ attitudes toward gambling and displays a promising potential in delineating the underlying cognitive mechanism of gambling disorder. Hui ZHOU received funding support from the Faculty of Social Sciences and the research grant of her thesis supervisor, Prof. Anise M. S. WU, to attend this conference.

Hui ZHOU’s current research interests mainly focus on behavioral additions (e.g., gambling addiction, Internet gaming addiction and smartphone addiction) from the perspective of neuroscience to investigate the neural correlates underlying behavioral addictions. Moreover, she is also interested in investigating protective factors to further conduct the preventions and interventions for those addictions.

Prof. Anise M. S. WU is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology. Her areas of expertise include addiction, health psychology, and aging. Her current research interests focus on behavioral addiction (e.g., gambling disorder, gaming disorder, internet addiction, problematic smartphone use, and excessive spending), and physical and mental wellbeing. Prof. WU is also one of the keynote speakers of the 8th International Conference on Behavioral Addiction.

The Department of Psychology is one of the most research active departments in UM. It is ranked 8th in Asia and 101-125th in the world according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023.
